09: FROM MICROABRASION TO BLEACHING. The Hidden Dangers of DIY Whitening Hacks Explained

Are whiter teeth worth the risk—or is your smile safer without the hype of quick-fix whitening treatments?

In this episode of Dental Formulator’s Playbook, Dr. Rob and Tami break down the science, risks, and realities behind popular dental whitening techniques. From enamel microabrasion to peroxide-based bleaching, they explore what really works, what to watch out for, and how to make safe, informed choices. The discussion covers why tooth discoloration often appears after orthodontic treatment, how microabrasion physically alters enamel, and the crucial role of fluoride in supporting remineralization. Dr. Rob also examines the limitations and potential side effects of both professional and over-the-counter whitening products, emphasizing that patient consent and procedure selection must always be grounded in evidence—not hype.
